Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) represents the combined content of all inorganic and organic substances dissolved in water — including minerals, salts, metals, and organic matter. TDS is a key indicator of drinking water quality and is easily estimated from electrical conductivity measurements.

The WHO recommends drinking water TDS below 600 mg/L for palatability, though up to 1,000 mg/L is considered acceptable. TDS above 1,200 mg/L may cause scaling in pipes and poor taste. This calculator converts conductivity readings to TDS using the standard conversion factor.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

TDS = electrical conductivity × conversion factor. The factor ranges 0.5–0.8 depending on water composition; 0.65 is the standard default. Classes: 1 (<300 mg/L): Excellent, 2 (300–600): Good, 3 (600–1000): Fair, 4 (>1000): Poor.

Understanding Your Results

TDS below 300 mg/L is excellent drinking water. Most bottled water is 100–300 mg/L. Municipal supplies are typically 200–500 mg/L. Reverse osmosis systems reduce TDS by 90–99%.
