pH is the fundamental measure of how acidic or basic water is, expressed on a scale from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly basic), with 7 being neutral. pH affects virtually every chemical and biological process in water — from metal solubility and nutrient availability to aquatic life survival.
The EPA recommends drinking water pH between 6.5 and 8.5. Aquatic ecosystems generally require 6.5–9.0. This calculator converts pH to hydrogen ion concentration and estimates the water's buffer capacity based on alkalinity, which determines resistance to pH change.
H⁺ concentration: [H⁺] = 10^(-pH). OH⁻ concentration: [OH⁻] = 10^(-(14-pH)). Buffer capacity: alkalinity ÷ 50 × 1.2 meq/L. Higher alkalinity means greater resistance to acid inputs (acid rain, mine drainage).
pH 6.5–8.5 is acceptable for most uses. Below 6.5 may corrode pipes and release metals. Above 9 causes bitter taste and scaling. Alkalinity above 100 mg/L CaCO₃ provides good buffering.
