Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water, which is why cold mountain streams support trout populations while warm ponds may not. This calculator estimates the theoretical saturation concentration — the maximum DO that water can hold under given conditions.
DO saturation ≈ 468 / (31.6 + T°C) × altitude factor × salinity factor. Altitude correction: (1 - altitude × 0.0001). Salinity correction: (1 - salinity × 0.0008). At 20°C sea level fresh water: ~9.1 mg/L.
Most fish species require DO above 5 mg/L. Cold-water species like trout need above 7 mg/L. Below 2 mg/L is considered hypoxic (dead zone). Monitor temperature trends as warming reduces DO capacity.
