Pesticides protect crops but can have significant environmental impacts on soil organisms, pollinators, aquatic life, and human health. The Pesticide Impact Calculator uses the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) methodology developed at Cornell University to quantify the ecological burden of pesticide applications.
The EIQ considers toxicity class, application rate, and treated area to produce a single impact score. Lower EIQ values indicate more environmentally benign pest management. This tool helps farmers compare pesticide options and adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies that minimize ecological harm.
EIQ: base EIQ × pesticide load per hectare. Base EIQ values: Low toxicity (III-IV): 15, Moderate (II): 35, High (I): 60. Load: total active ingredient × applications ÷ area. Impact score: EIQ × load × 0.5, capped at 100.
An impact score below 20 indicates low environmental risk. Between 20–50 is moderate. Above 50 suggests high ecological impact and an IPM approach should be considered. Compare alternatives before each application.

Pesticide Impact is a quantitative measure used in environmental science and ecology. It represents key metrics that help researchers, policymakers, and individuals understand environmental impacts. The specific definition and measurement methodology are established by international scientific organizations and regulatory bodies.
How are pesticides classified by toxicity involves analyzing relevant parameters using established scientific methodologies. Our calculator applies peer-reviewed formulas and standard emission factors to provide accurate results. The specific approach varies by parameter but follows guidelines from organizations such as the EPA, IPCC, and relevant scientific bodies.

There are several evidence-based strategies to improve your results. Start by focusing on the largest contributing factors identified in your calculation. Small changes in the dominant input parameters often yield the greatest improvements. Consult local environmental agencies for region-specific recommendations and incentive programs.
