The Crop Yield Carbon Footprint Calculator measures the greenhouse gas intensity of crop production — how much CO₂ is emitted per ton of crop harvested. This carbon intensity metric is increasingly used in sustainability certifications and supply chain assessments.
Lower carbon intensity indicates more efficient production. Key drivers include nitrogen fertilizer efficiency (the largest single emission source in crop farming) and fuel consumption for field operations. Improving yield per hectare without proportionally increasing inputs is the most effective way to reduce intensity.
N₂O emissions: area × N rate × 0.01 × 44/28 × 265 (GWP) ÷ 1000. Fuel: area × L/ha × 2.68 kg CO₂/L ÷ 1000. Carbon intensity: total CO₂e ÷ total yield. The IPCC default emission factor of 1% for direct N₂O from applied nitrogen is used.
Efficient cereal production achieves 150–250 kg CO₂e/ton. Above 400 suggests over-fertilization or low yields. Split nitrogen applications and variable-rate technology can reduce N₂O emissions by 10–30% without yield loss.
