The Cool Farm Tool is a greenhouse gas calculator designed for agricultural operations. It estimates emissions from crop production, including nitrogen fertilizer use (which generates N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas), soil emissions, and crop-specific factors. Rice paddies, for instance, produce significant methane emissions from anaerobic decomposition.
Developed by the Cool Farm Alliance, this methodology helps farmers and agribusinesses quantify their carbon footprint and identify reduction opportunities. Optimizing fertilizer application rates, using precision agriculture, and adopting conservation tillage can significantly reduce farm-level emissions while maintaining productivity.
Fertilizer N₂O emissions: area × N rate × 0.01 (IPCC emission factor) × 44/28 (N₂O/N ratio) × 265 (GWP). Crop emissions: area × crop factor. Crop factors (tons CO₂e/ha): Wheat: 0.3, Corn: 0.35, Rice: 1.5 (includes CH₄), Soybean: 0.2. Intensity: total ÷ total yield.
A carbon intensity below 300 kg CO₂e/ton of crop is considered efficient for cereals. Rice typically shows higher intensity due to methane. Reducing nitrogen application by 20% while maintaining yields can cut emissions by 15–25%.

There are several evidence-based strategies to improve your results. Start by focusing on the largest contributing factors identified in your calculation. Small changes in the dominant input parameters often yield the greatest improvements. Consult local environmental agencies for region-specific recommendations and incentive programs.
