The Flight Carbon Footprint Calculator estimates the greenhouse gas emissions from your air travel based on flight distance, seat class, and trip type.
Business and first-class seats have a significantly higher carbon footprint because they occupy more floor space per passenger, meaning fewer travelers share the aircraft's total emissions. Economy class distributes the fuel burn across more passengers, resulting in a lower per-person footprint. This calculator uses the methodology recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and emission factors from DEFRA.
The core formula is: CO₂ = distance × trip_multiplier × emission_factor × class_factor
The base emission factor is 0.115 kg CO₂ per passenger-km for economy class. Business class uses a multiplier of 1.54× and first class 2.4×, reflecting the larger share of cabin space. Round trips double the distance. The radiative forcing index (RFI) of ~1.9 is sometimes applied to account for non-CO₂ effects at altitude (contrails, NOx), though this calculator shows direct CO₂ only.
