The Semester Grade Calculator computes your final semester grade by combining your midterm exam, final exam, and homework/assignment grades according to their respective weights. Most university and high school courses use a weighted grading system where different components contribute different proportions to your overall semester grade, and this calculator makes that computation instant and transparent.
For example, a common course structure might weight the final exam at 40%, the midterm at 30%, and homework at 30%. Under this structure, a strong final exam performance can significantly raise a borderline grade, while poor homework completion can drag down an otherwise solid exam performance. Understanding these dynamics empowers you to strategically allocate your study time.
This calculator automatically normalizes for weights that don't perfectly sum to 100%, dividing the weighted sum by the actual total weight to ensure accuracy. So whether your course weights sum to 100%, 95%, or any other value due to rounding in your syllabus, the result is always accurate.
Use this calculator at the start of the semester to understand your course's grade structure, during the semester to project your current standing, and at the end to verify your final grade before it's officially posted. It's an essential tool for any student who wants to stay on top of their academic performance with data rather than guesswork.
The semester grade is calculated using a weighted average formula:
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{\sum (\text{Grade}_i \times \text{Weight}_i)}{\sum \text{Weight}_i}$$
Expanding for our three components:
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{(G_m \times W_m) + (G_f \times W_f) + (G_h \times W_h)}{W_m + W_f + W_h}$$
Where \(G_m, G_f, G_h\) are midterm, final, and homework grades, and \(W_m, W_f, W_h\) are their respective weights.
Example: Midterm = 82% (30%), Final = 88% (40%), Homework = 95% (30%):
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{(82 \times 30) + (88 \times 40) + (95 \times 30)}{30 + 40 + 30}$$
$$= \frac{2460 + 3520 + 2850}{100} = \frac{8830}{100} = 88.30\%$$
This corresponds to a B+ on the standard scale.
Your semester grade reflects the cumulative weighted impact of all three major grade components. If your semester grade is near a grade boundary (e.g., 89.5% near the A-/B+ cutoff), a tiny improvement on any remaining work could shift your letter grade up. Look at which component has the highest weight — improving performance on that component has the greatest impact on your final grade. For example, a 5-point boost on a 40%-weighted final exam improves your semester grade by 2 full percentage points.

High homework scores (30%) partially offset weak exam performance, but a C+ shows exams dominate the grade.

Consistently solid scores across all components produce a 90.4% A-.
The calculator handles this automatically. It divides the weighted sum by the actual total of your entered weights, not by 100. So if your weights sum to 95, the formula adjusts accordingly and still produces the correct weighted average.
This calculator supports three categories. For more complex grade structures with quizzes, labs, projects, and participation, use the Class Grade Calculator, which accommodates four categories with full weight customization.
It depends entirely on its weight. If the final exam is worth 40% of your grade, a 10-point improvement on the final raises your semester grade by 4 percentage points. A 50%-weighted final has even more leverage. Always check your syllabus for exact weights.
Yes. Enter your actual midterm and homework grades, then experiment with different final exam scores to see what semester grade results. This helps you determine the minimum final exam score needed to achieve your target semester grade.
Yes. It works for any course that uses a weighted grade system — high school, college, graduate school, or professional certification programs. Just match the weights to your syllabus.
If a grade is dropped, exclude that assignment from both your homework grade and its weight. Calculate your homework grade from only the remaining assignments, and use the remaining total weight as the homework weight input.
