The semester grade is calculated using a weighted average formula:
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{\sum (\text{Grade}_i \times \text{Weight}_i)}{\sum \text{Weight}_i}$$
Expanding for our three components:
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{(G_m \times W_m) + (G_f \times W_f) + (G_h \times W_h)}{W_m + W_f + W_h}$$
Where \(G_m, G_f, G_h\) are midterm, final, and homework grades, and \(W_m, W_f, W_h\) are their respective weights.
Example: Midterm = 82% (30%), Final = 88% (40%), Homework = 95% (30%):
$$\text{Semester Grade} = \frac{(82 \times 30) + (88 \times 40) + (95 \times 30)}{30 + 40 + 30}$$
$$= \frac{2460 + 3520 + 2850}{100} = \frac{8830}{100} = 88.30\%$$
This corresponds to a B+ on the standard scale.
Your semester grade reflects the cumulative weighted impact of all three major grade components. If your semester grade is near a grade boundary (e.g., 89.5% near the A-/B+ cutoff), a tiny improvement on any remaining work could shift your letter grade up. Look at which component has the highest weight — improving performance on that component has the greatest impact on your final grade. For example, a 5-point boost on a 40%-weighted final exam improves your semester grade by 2 full percentage points.
