The Exam Score Calculator quickly converts your raw exam results — number of correct answers, total questions, and any bonus points — into a percentage score and letter grade. Whether you just finished a 50-question multiple-choice test or a 100-question comprehensive final, this calculator delivers your score instantly without manual arithmetic.

Many students lose track of their performance during an exam and want to quickly assess their score afterward. This tool also calculates the number of wrong answers, which is useful for understanding the margin between your actual score and a perfect score, or for identifying how many questions you need to revisit during exam review.

The bonus points field accommodates extra credit questions that are increasingly common in modern academic testing. Bonus points are added to your score but the total never exceeds 100%, reflecting typical grading policies. For exams where bonus points can push the score above 100%, use the percentage output as-is (the calculator caps at 100% by default).

This calculator is suitable for all types of exams: standardized tests, classroom quizzes, certification exams, and competitive entrance exams. Simply enter your results and get immediate, accurate feedback on your performance level.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The exam score is computed in two steps. First, the raw percentage:

$$\text{Raw \%} = \frac{\text{Correct Answers}}{\text{Total Questions}} \times 100$$

If bonus points are included, they are converted to a percentage based on total questions and added:

$$\text{Bonus \%} = \frac{\text{Bonus Points}}{\text{Total Questions}} \times 100$$

$$\text{Final Score} = \min(\text{Raw \%} + \text{Bonus \%},\; 100)$$

The number of wrong answers is:

$$\text{Wrong Answers} = \text{Total Questions} - \text{Correct Answers}$$

Example: 42 correct out of 50, with 2 bonus points:

$$\text{Raw \%} = \frac{42}{50} \times 100 = 84\%$$

$$\text{Bonus \%} = \frac{2}{50} \times 100 = 4\%$$

$$\text{Final Score} = \min(84 + 4, 100) = 88\%\quad\Rightarrow\quad B+$$

Understanding Your Results

Your exam score reflects your command of the material tested. A score above 90% shows strong mastery; 80–89% indicates good understanding with minor gaps; 70–79% is satisfactory but suggests some review is needed. Below 70%, seriously review the missed questions — wrong answers reveal exactly which topics need reinforcement. Always analyze your wrong answers by topic area to identify systematic weaknesses rather than random mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bonus points are converted to a percentage using the total number of questions as the denominator. They are added to your raw score, with the final result capped at 100%. This matches the most common grading policy for bonus questions.

This calculator does not apply negative marking. For exams with penalty scoring (e.g., -0.25 per wrong answer), calculate your score as: (correct × 1) + (wrong × penalty) / total × 100, and enter that result directly as a percentage score in a different calculator.

Yes. This calculator is format-agnostic — it works for any exam where each question is either correct or incorrect. Whether multiple-choice, true/false, matching, or fill-in-the-blank, just count correct answers versus total questions.

For partial credit scenarios, total your earned partial points and total possible points, then use the Percentage Calculator (Scores) instead — it handles arbitrary point totals more flexibly than this question-count-based tool.

For standard exams, yes. However, if some questions were skipped or left blank and your teacher distinguishes between blank and wrong answers, count only the questions you actively got wrong. Blank answers are sometimes not penalized.

This calculator gives you a raw percentage score. Standardized tests like the SAT and ACT use scaled scoring systems that don't correspond directly to raw percentages. Use official score calculators from College Board or ACT for those tests. For classroom exams, this tool is fully applicable.
