The Pace Calculator is the go-to tool for runners, walkers, hikers, and triathletes who want to understand their performance in terms of time per mile or time per kilometer. Unlike speed (which tells you how far you go per unit time), pace flips the relationship: it tells you how long it takes to cover a single unit of distance. Most runners think in pace, not speed — a sub-8-minute mile is a meaningful benchmark, while quoting it as 7.5 mph is less intuitive to most athletes.

Enter your distance and finish time (hours, minutes, and seconds) and the calculator outputs your exact pace in both imperial and metric units, plus your equivalent speed in mph and km/h. This is useful for post-workout analysis, race goal setting, training plan design, and comparing efforts across different distances. A runner who completes a 5-mile run in 42 minutes is running at an 8:24 per mile pace — a concrete benchmark to track progress toward a goal.

Pace is also the foundation of race time prediction. If you know your current 5K pace, you can estimate your 10K, half marathon, and marathon finish times using standard race equivalency tables. This calculator gives you the precise pace value you need to feed into those projections. The km/h and mph outputs allow direct comparison with treadmill settings, cycling speeds, and vehicle speeds for cross-sport context.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

All time inputs are first unified into total seconds:

$$t_{sec} = h \times 3600 + m \times 60 + s$$

Speed is then computed:

$$v_{mph} = \frac{d_{miles}}{t_{sec} / 3600}$$

Pace per mile (in seconds per mile) is the reciprocal:

$$pace_{sec/mile} = \frac{3600}{v_{mph}}$$

To display in MM:SS format, the integer number of minutes is extracted and the remainder in seconds is appended:

$$pace_{min} = \lfloor pace_{sec/mile} / 60 \rfloor, \quad pace_{sec\_remainder} = pace_{sec/mile} \bmod 60$$

Pace per kilometer uses the km/h speed:

$$pace_{sec/km} = \frac{3600}{v_{mph} \times 1.60934}$$

The displayed output encodes MM.SS as a decimal (e.g., 8:24 is shown as 8.24) for readability within the numeric output field.

Understanding Your Results

A pace of 6:00 per mile (6 mph) is a comfortable recreational running pace for many adults. Sub-7:00 per mile is considered intermediate; sub-5:30 is advanced running. Walking paces range from 15:00 to 20:00 per mile. If your pace per km is lower than your pace per mile, something is wrong — km paces should always be lower numbers than mile paces for the same effort. A very low pace (e.g., 1:30 per mile) suggests a very fast sprint or incorrect time input.

Results

pace per mile8.24
pace per km5.12

A 25-minute 5K is roughly an 8:03 min/mile or 4:59 min/km pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most beginners run at a 10–12 minute per mile pace (5–6 mph). The key is conversational pace — you should be able to speak in short sentences while running. As fitness improves, pace naturally decreases toward the 8–9 min/mile range.

Multiply your pace (in decimal minutes per mile) by the race distance in miles. For example, a 9:00 min/mile pace over a half marathon (13.1 miles) predicts \(9 \times 13.1 = 117.9\) minutes, or about 1 hour 58 minutes.

Because a kilometer is shorter than a mile (1 km ≈ 0.621 miles). It takes less time to cover the shorter distance, so the pace number (time per unit) is smaller. A 10:00 min/mile pace equals about 6:13 min/km.

Treadmill speeds in mph are directly comparable. Pace = 60 / speed_mph. At 6.0 mph you run a 10:00 min/mile; at 7.5 mph you run an 8:00 min/mile. Most treadmill displays can switch between mph and min/mile mode.

Yes. Uphill running slows pace significantly even at the same effort level. Running on a 5% incline can add 90 seconds or more per mile. GPS watches calculate pace from flat-projected speed; actual effort on hills is better measured by heart rate than pace alone.

As of 2025, the men's marathon world record is approximately 2:00:35, which equates to roughly a 4:36 min/mile (2:51 min/km) pace sustained for 26.2 miles — an extraordinary physiological feat.
