The Flight Time Calculator estimates how long an air journey will take based on the great-circle distance between airports and the aircraft's average cruising speed. Whether you are booking a transatlantic flight, planning an international itinerary, or simply curious about how long a route takes, this tool provides a quick estimate of airborne time plus layover duration in a clear format.

Commercial aircraft cruise at speeds between 480 and 575 mph for narrow-body jets (Boeing 737, Airbus A320) and up to 600 mph for wide-body aircraft (Boeing 777, A350). The default speed of 550 mph represents a typical medium-haul commercial jet. A New York to Los Angeles flight covers approximately 2,450 miles and takes about 5 hours 30 minutes at 550 mph — consistent with published schedules. Transoceanic routes like New York to London (roughly 3,450 miles) take approximately 7 hours of airborne time.

Layovers — waiting periods at connecting airports — are a major factor in total travel time for multi-leg journeys. A layover of just 90 minutes can add significantly to a trip's total duration when it falls between two long-haul segments. This calculator adds the layover time to the flying time, giving you the full door-to-door air travel estimate before you add airport arrival time and ground transportation.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

Flight time uses the same formula as all speed-distance problems:

$$t_{flight} = \frac{d}{v}$$

where d is the great-circle distance in miles and v is the average cruising speed in mph. The decimal result is split into whole hours and remaining minutes:

$$t_{hr} = \lfloor t_{flight} \rfloor, \quad t_{min} = \text{round}\left((t_{flight} - \lfloor t_{flight} \rfloor) \times 60\right)$$

Total travel time includes the layover:

$$t_{total} = t_{flight} + \frac{t_{layover\_min}}{60}$$

Note: this model does not account for jet stream tailwinds or headwinds, which can add or subtract 30–60 minutes on transatlantic routes. Real published flight times already incorporate these adjustments.

Understanding Your Results

Flight times under 3 hours are generally considered short-haul. 3–7 hours is medium-haul. Over 7 hours is long-haul, and over 12 hours is ultra-long-haul. If your calculated time is significantly shorter than published airline schedules, the airline may have padded the schedule for on-time performance or the actual route may include detours around restricted airspace. Add 30–60 minutes to the raw calculation for a more realistic estimate of total airborne time on most routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Published schedules include taxiing, ATC routing around weather, altitude adjustments, and schedule padding for on-time statistics. The calculator computes straight-line cruising time only. Add 30–60 minutes for a more realistic figure.

Light private jets cruise at 400–500 mph; mid-size jets at 450–530 mph; large-cabin jets at 500–560 mph. Turboprops cruise at 250–350 mph. Use the appropriate speed for your aircraft category.

The calculator uses whatever distance you enter. For accurate results, look up the great-circle (as-the-crow-flies) distance between airports rather than straight-line map distances, which may differ due to Earth's curvature on long routes.

A strong jet stream tailwind (80–150 mph) can reduce westbound transatlantic flight times by 1–2 hours. Headwinds on eastbound legs can add similar amounts. The calculator assumes calm air, so real times may differ by ±15%.

Total travel time adds the layover to the airborne flight time. It does not include airport check-in time (typically 2 hours international, 1 hour domestic), baggage claim, or ground transportation at your destination.

As of 2025, Singapore Airlines SQ23 from Newark to Singapore covers approximately 9,521 miles and takes about 18–19 hours — one of the longest non-stop commercial routes in operation.
