The Natural Increase Rate (NIR) Calculator determines the rate at which a population grows (or declines) based solely on births and deaths, excluding migration. NIR is the difference between the Crude Birth Rate and the Crude Death Rate, expressed as a percentage. It is a fundamental measure in population ecology and demography.

This calculator also estimates the population doubling time using the Rule of 70, which divides 70 by the growth rate percentage. Understanding NIR helps ecologists model population trajectories and helps policymakers anticipate resource needs.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The Natural Increase Rate is calculated as:

NIR (%) = (CBR - CDR) / 10

Where CBR and CDR are expressed per 1,000. Dividing by 10 converts the per-1,000 difference to a percentage. The doubling time is estimated using:

Doubling Time = 70 / NIR

A positive NIR means the population is growing naturally; a negative NIR means it is shrinking. An NIR of 0 means births exactly balance deaths.

An NIR of 2.8% indicates rapid growth with a doubling time of only 25 years, typical of some developing nations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Natural Increase Rate is the difference between the crude birth rate and crude death rate, expressed as a percentage. It measures population growth due to natural causes only (births minus deaths), excluding immigration and emigration.

The Rule of 70 is a quick estimation method for population doubling time. You divide 70 by the annual growth rate percentage to get the approximate number of years it will take for the population to double. It assumes exponential growth at a constant rate.

Yes. When deaths exceed births (CDR is greater than CBR), the NIR is negative, indicating natural population decline. Countries like Japan, Bulgaria, and Latvia currently have negative NIRs, meaning their populations shrink without immigration.
