The Mortality Rate Calculator computes the death rate from a specific cause or all causes within a defined population at risk. Mortality rates can be expressed per 1,000, per 10,000, or per 100,000 depending on convention and the rarity of the cause of death. This is one of the most widely used measures in epidemiology and public health.

Cause-specific mortality rates help identify leading causes of death, track epidemic progression, evaluate intervention effectiveness, and allocate healthcare resources. This calculator is used by epidemiologists, public health professionals, clinicians, and population ecologists.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The mortality rate formula is:

Mortality Rate = (Deaths / Population at Risk) × Multiplier

Where:

  • Deaths is the number of deaths from the specified cause during the time period
  • Population at Risk is the total population that could potentially experience the event
  • Multiplier is typically 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000 to express the rate as a whole number

The mortality proportion (deaths divided by population) is also provided as a raw decimal value for use in further calculations.

Worked Examples

Disease-Specific Mortality

Inputs

deaths150
population at risk100000
multiplier100000

Results

mortality rate150
proportion0.0015

150 deaths per 100,000 population at risk. This rate is commonly used for cancer or cardiovascular mortality reporting.

Infant Mortality per 1,000 Live Births

Inputs

deaths35
population at risk5000
multiplier1000

Results

mortality rate7
proportion0.007

An infant mortality rate of 7 per 1,000 live births is typical of a developed country.

Frequently Asked Questions

The mortality rate uses the entire population at risk as the denominator, while the case fatality rate uses only people diagnosed with the disease as the denominator. Mortality rate measures the risk of death in the whole population, whereas case fatality rate measures the lethality of a specific disease among those who contract it.

The choice depends on convention for the condition and the magnitude of the rate. Common diseases use per 1,000 or per 10,000. Rare diseases and specific cancer types are typically reported per 100,000. Use the multiplier that produces a readable number, usually between 1 and 1,000.

The population at risk includes everyone who could potentially experience the outcome. For general mortality, it is the entire population. For disease-specific mortality, it may be restricted to susceptible groups. For maternal mortality, it is women of reproductive age or total live births.
