In Islam, all dates are calculated using the Hijri (Islamic lunar) calendar, which has 12 lunar months and no intercalary adjustment. Religious obligations, ages for maturity, pilgrimage timing, and fasting dates are all determined by Hijri reckoning. A Muslim's Hijri age may be 1-3 years older than their Gregorian age.

This calculator gives an approximation. For exact Hijri age, you need the person's precise birth date converted to the Hijri calendar, then count Hijri years from birth to today. Our calculation uses the mean lunar year length, which is accurate on average but may differ by up to one year from a precise Hijri conversion.

The Chinese Lunar New Year marks the beginning of a new year in the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. In the East Asian traditional age system, age increments on this date. Since the Lunar New Year falls in late January or February each year, people born after the New Year but before their Gregorian birthday may experience a complex interaction between lunar and solar ages.

With a global average life expectancy of approximately 73 years, the average person experiences about 902 complete lunar cycles (73 x 365.25 / 29.53059 ≈ 902 lunar months).

While many folk traditions link the lunar cycle to biology, science has found limited direct evidence of lunar influence on human physiology beyond well-documented tidal effects. The connection between lunar calendars and age is primarily cultural and religious rather than biological.

A lunisolar calendar uses lunar months as its base unit but periodically adds an intercalary (leap) month to keep the calendar aligned with the solar year. The Hebrew, Chinese, and Hindu calendars are examples. A purely lunar calendar like the Islamic Hijri calendar does not add intercalary months and thus drifts through the seasons over time.
