The Date Difference Calculator estimates the number of days, weeks, months, and years between two dates. It is useful for project planning, calculating age, tracking deadlines, counting down to events, or simply finding out how much time has passed between two points in history.

Enter a start date and end date using year, month, and day fields, and the calculator will display the approximate difference in multiple time units. Please note that this calculator uses a simplified model (365 days per year, 30 days per month) and does not account for leap years or varying month lengths.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The calculator computes the total number of days using a simplified formula:

Total Days = (End Year - Start Year) x 365 + (End Month - Start Month) x 30 + (End Day - Start Day)

From the total days, other units are derived:

  • Weeks: Total Days / 7
  • Months (approx): Total Days / 30
  • Years (approx): Total Days / 365

This approximation assumes every year has 365 days and every month has 30 days. For most practical purposes the results are close to the actual difference, but they may differ by a few days from the exact calendar difference, especially over long time spans or when the period includes February in a leap year.

Understanding Your Results

The results provide a quick approximation of the time span between your two dates. The "days" output is the most useful for short periods, while "months" and "years" are better for longer spans. Keep in mind that these are approximate values: actual calendar months vary from 28 to 31 days, and leap years add an extra day every four years (with century exceptions). For exact calendar calculations, a date-aware tool that accounts for these irregularities is recommended.

Worked Examples

January 1, 2020 to January 1, 2026

Inputs

start year2020
start month1
start day1
end year2026
end month1
end day1

Results

days2190
weeks312.9
months approx73
years approx6

Six years equals approximately 2,190 days using the simplified 365-day year model. The actual count is 2,192 due to leap years in 2020 and 2024.

March 15, 2025 to September 30, 2025

start month3
start day15
end year2025
end month9
end day30

Results

days195
weeks27.9
months approx6.5
years approx0.53

Approximately 6.5 months or about 195 days between mid-March and the end of September.

July 4, 1990 to February 21, 2026

Roughly 35.5 years or about 12,967 days from Independence Day 1990 to February 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

This calculator uses a simplified model where every year is 365 days and every month is 30 days. In reality, months range from 28 to 31 days, and leap years (every 4 years, except most century years) add an extra day. The approximation is typically accurate within a few days for periods under a decade and remains useful for quick estimates over longer spans.

You can use it for a close approximation of your age in days, weeks, months, or years. However, because the calculator does not account for leap years or exact month lengths, the result may differ from the precise calendar count by a small number of days. For an exact age calculation, a calendar-aware date tool would be more appropriate.

If the start date is later than the end date, the calculator will return negative values. The absolute value of the result still represents the number of days between the two dates; the negative sign simply indicates that the dates are in reverse chronological order.
