Reineke's SDI Formula
SDI = TPA × (QMD / 10)^1.605
TPA = trees per acre; QMD = quadratic mean diameter (inches); 1.605 = Reineke's slope constant. Example: 200 TPA with QMD = 8 inches: SDI = 200 × (8/10)^1.605 = 200 × 0.707 ≈ 141.

QMD equals the diameter of the tree of mean basal area — always ≥ arithmetic mean DBH. From stand data: QMD = √(BA / (0.005454 × TPA)) in US units.
Interpreting SDI Values
Maximum SDI (SDI_max) is species-specific — ranging from ~300 for intolerant species to ~900 for shade-tolerant conifers. Management thresholds as percent of SDI_max:
- Less than 35%: Free-growing zone — trees have no competition stress
- 35–55%: Full site occupancy — normal competition, good growth
- More than 55–60%: Competition mortality zone — density-related tree death begins
SDI in Thinning Prescriptions
Thinning is triggered when SDI approaches 55–60% of SDI_max. Post-thinning targets aim for 25–35% SDI_max to maximize individual tree growth response. Thinning from below removes suppressed trees (maintains QMD); thinning from above removes large trees (reduces QMD but increases understory light).
