Basic Plot Conversion Formula
Per-hectare value = (observed value on plot / plot area in ha)
Example: A 0.04 ha circular plot contains 8 trees. Trees per hectare = 8 / 0.04 = 200 trees/ha.
For basal area: a plot contains 0.5 m² basal area on a 0.04 ha plot → BA/ha = 0.5 / 0.04 = 12.5 m²/ha.
Common Plot Sizes and Conversion Factors
- 0.04 ha (400 m²) circular plot: r = 11.28 m; multiply by 25 to get per-hectare
- 0.1 ha (1000 m²) circular plot: r = 17.84 m; multiply by 10 to get per-hectare
- 1/10 acre plot (US forestry): multiply by 10 to get per-acre; multiply by 24.7 for per-hectare
- 1/4 acre plot: multiply by 4 to get per-acre

Basal Area Factor (BAF) in Variable Radius Plots
Variable radius (angle gauge / prism) plots use a basal area factor (BAF) instead of a fixed area. Each 'in' tree counts as BAF m²/ha of basal area. Common BAF values: 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 m²/ha. With BAF 4: count 12 'in' trees → BA = 12 × 4 = 48 m²/ha. Combine with a form factor and tree height to estimate volume/ha.

Divide the observed value on your plot by the plot area in hectares: Per-hectare value = plot observation / plot area (ha). Example: you count 5 trees on a 0.04 ha plot → 5 / 0.04 = 125 trees/ha. If you measured 0.3 m² of basal area on the same 0.04 ha plot → 0.3 / 0.04 = 7.5 m² BA/ha. Always ensure plot area is in the same units as the reporting unit (ha for per-ha, acres for per-acre).
1 hectare = 2.4711 acres. To convert ha to acres: multiply by 2.4711. To convert acres to ha: multiply by 0.4047. A 1/10 acre fixed-radius plot has an area of 0.04047 ha. In US forestry, it is the most common sampling unit. Its radius is approximately 37.2 feet (11.34 m). Values measured on a 1/10 acre plot are multiplied by 10 to get per-acre estimates, or by 24.71 to get per-hectare estimates. For small trees and regeneration, smaller plots (1/100 acre, radius 11.78 ft) reduce counting time while maintaining accuracy for dense stocking.
A prism cruise (variable radius plot) uses an optical wedge prism of known basal area factor (BAF). When you look through the prism at a tree from a fixed point, trees appear shifted. If the shifted image overlaps the direct image, the tree is 'in' and counted. Each counted tree represents BAF m² of basal area per hectare. With BAF = 4: if you count 15 'in' trees, stand BA = 15 × 4 = 60 m²/ha. Prism cruising is faster than fixed plots for large-area inventories.
