Cat-Specific Nutritional Requirements

Cats have several unique dietary requirements not shared by dogs or humans:

Dog Nutritional Basics

Life Stage Feeding

Puppy/Kitten: high protein, calcium, phosphorus for growth; feed 3–4 times daily. Adult maintenance: twice daily. Senior: moderate protein, increased omega-3s, joint support. Pregnant/lactating: significantly increased energy and protein demands (see DER).

Reading Pet Food Labels

AAFCO statement must indicate: 'complete and balanced' for the life stage; substantiated by feeding trials or nutrient analysis. Ingredients listed by weight before processing. Guaranteed analysis shows minimum protein/fat and maximum fiber/moisture as-fed percentages.

Deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy (enlarged, weakened heart) and central retinal degeneration leading to blindness. Commercial cat foods must contain adequate taurine (AAFCO minimum: 0.1% DM for dry food; 0.2% DM for canned food). Dogs on taurine-deficient grain-free diets have also been implicated in DCM cases, though dogs can normally synthesize sufficient taurine.

Step 1: Calculate RER = 70 × (BW_kg)^0.75. Step 2: Apply life stage factor (DER = RER × factor): neutered adult dog × 1.6; neutered adult cat × 1.2. Step 3: Divide DER (kcal/day) by the caloric density of the food (kcal/cup or kcal/can — found on the label or manufacturer website). Step 4: Split into 2 daily meals. Recheck body weight every 4 weeks and adjust — individual variation is significant. Body Condition Score (BCS) assessment is more reliable than weight alone.

'Complete and balanced' means the food provides all required nutrients at levels meeting AAFCO standards for the stated life stage. This designation can be achieved by: (1) meeting AAFCO nutrient profiles (formulation method), or (2) passing AAFCO feeding trials (feeding 8 cats or dogs for 26 weeks and meeting health outcome criteria). Feeding trial substantiation is more rigorous. Foods not labeled 'complete and balanced' are intended as treats or supplements, not sole diets. The label must specify the life stage (growth, adult maintenance, or all life stages).

Growing animals have higher requirements for: energy (kittens ~2.5× adult RER; puppies ~2× adult RER); protein (AAFCO puppy minimum: 22% DM vs. 18% adult); calcium and phosphorus (critical for bone mineralization — both excess and deficiency cause skeletal deformities); and essential fatty acids (DHA for brain development). Growing animals should eat foods formulated for growth or all life stages. Large-breed puppies need specifically restricted calcium content to prevent developmental orthopedic disease. Switching to adult food occurs at 80–90% of expected adult size.
