Human NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin) and acetaminophen are toxic to companion animals: Ibuprofen/naproxen in dogs: even small doses can cause gastrointestinal ulceration (GI bleeding, perforation), acute kidney failure, and neurological signs (seizures at high doses); 5 mg/kg can be toxic in cats; 100 mg/kg in dogs. Aspirin: dogs metabolize it more slowly; can cause GI ulcers; never use with other NSAIDs. Practical medication administration tips: Tablets/capsules: hide in soft treats (pill pockets, cream cheese, peanut butter — check for xylitol!); use a pet pill gun/popper for cats; follow with a syringe of water to ensure swallowing. Liquids: use a needleless syringe; place at the side of the mouth (not straight back — risk of aspiration); give small amounts slowly. Topical (spot-on): apply to skin between shoulder blades (cats) or back of neck; ensure area is dry and parted to contact skin, not fur; prevent grooming of application site for 30 minutes. Compliance: complete the full antibiotic course even if symptoms resolve; stopping early promotes resistance and relapse.
