Pet food provides all nutrients required by companion animals — proteins (amino acids), fats (fatty acids, energy), carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Pet food in the US is regulated by AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials), which establishes nutrient profiles and feeding trial standards. AAFCO Nutritional Standards

AAFCO defines nutrient profiles for dogs (adult maintenance; growth and reproduction) and cats. A complete and balanced diet must meet these minimums. Methods: (1) Chemical analysis — prove nutrients meet minimums; (2) Feeding trial — prove the food supports dogs/cats through life stage for 6 months. Feeding trial is the gold standard for demonstrating nutritional adequacy.

(2) Feeding trial — actual dogs or cats fed the food for 6 months showed no nutritional deficiencies. Feeding trials provide stronger evidence. Treats and supplemental foods do not carry this statement and are not nutritionally complete.

Cats are obligate carnivores with unique metabolic requirements: (1) Taurine — cats cannot synthesize adequate taurine; deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration; must be provided in food. (2) Arginine — cats lack carbamoyl phosphate synthase I enzyme; even brief arginine deficiency causes fatal hyperammonemia. (3) Arachidonic acid — cats cannot synthesize from linoleic acid (lack delta-6-desaturase); requires pre-formed AA from animal sources. (4) Niacin — cats cannot synthesize from tryptophan. (5) Vitamin A — cats cannot convert beta-carotene; require pre-formed retinol from animal sources. Dogs are omnivores and can synthesize most of these from precursors.

Guaranteed analysis (GA) shows minimum crude protein (%), minimum crude fat (%), maximum crude fiber (%), and maximum moisture (%). 'Crude' means measured by a chemical method (Kjeldahl for protein, ether extraction for fat), not digestibility. To compare foods on a dry matter basis (remove moisture effect): dry matter (%) = value / (100 − moisture%) × 100. Example: food with 28% crude protein and 78% moisture: DM protein = 28/(100−78) × 100 = 127% — impossible because the food has 78% water and only 22% dry matter. Correct: DM protein = 28/22 × 100 = 127% protein on DM basis is wrong — these must be recalculated: 28/22 × 100 = DM = 28 × 100/22 = 127, but 28% of 100g = 28g protein in 22g DM = 127% DM protein. Use GA plus moisture to compare canned vs. dry foods fairly.

In 2018–2020, the FDA investigated a possible association between certain grain-free, legume-heavy dog foods and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) — a serious heart muscle disease — in dog breeds not typically predisposed. Hypothesis: legume-based diets (lentils, peas, chickpeas) may reduce taurine bioavailability, or other diet-induced factors may contribute to DCM independent of taurine. The FDA identified no definitive causal mechanism and closed active investigation in 2022. Current consensus: continue feeding AAFCO-compliant diets; if feeding grain-free diets, choose brands with extensive feeding trial evidence; discuss with a veterinarian if your dog's breed (Golden Retriever, Doberman Pinscher, Cocker Spaniel) has elevated DCM risk.
