Dog Age in Human Years
The AVMA and most veterinary authorities recognize that dogs mature quickly in the first 1–2 years of life, then age at a rate that depends on body size:
- Small dogs (<20 lbs): 15 human years at 1 year; ~4 human years per dog year after maturity
- Medium dogs (20–50 lbs): 15 at 1 year; ~5 human years per dog year after maturity
- Large dogs (>50 lbs): 15 at 1 year; ~6–7 human years per dog year — shorter lifespan overall
Cat Age in Human Years
Cats age very rapidly in the first 2 years — a 1-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old cat to a 24-year-old. After year 2, aging slows to approximately 4 human years per cat year. A 15-year-old cat is approximately equivalent to a 76-year-old human.
The DNA Methylation Model
A 2020 study (Wang et al.) mapped epigenetic aging in Labrador Retrievers and humans using DNA methylation clocks. The formula proposed is: Human equivalent age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. This gives a 1-year-old dog ≈ 31 human years, and an 8-year-old dog ≈ 64 human years — much closer to biological reality than the simple ×7 rule.
Breed-Specific Lifespan
Smaller dog breeds (Chihuahuas, Dachshunds) commonly live 15–18 years. Medium breeds (Beagles, Cocker Spaniels) live 12–15 years. Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs, Bernese Mountain Dogs) often live only 7–10 years. This inverse relationship between body size and lifespan in dogs is the opposite of the pattern seen across mammal species, and its genetic mechanisms are actively studied.
