NPP Formula
NPP = GPP − Ra
GPP = gross primary production (total photosynthesis); Ra = autotrophic respiration (plant respiration for maintenance and growth). Ra ≈ 50% of GPP on average. NPP ≈ 0.5 × GPP as a rough approximation.

Measuring NPP
- Aboveground NPP (ANPP): Harvest above-ground biomass increment + litterfall. Most commonly measured in field studies.

- Total NPP: ANPP + BNPP + fine root turnover. Globally, BNPP often equals or exceeds ANPP.

NPP is the carbon available to consumers (herbivores, decomposers) — it is the base of food web energy transfer and ecological efficiency calculations. NEP (net ecosystem production) = NPP − Rh (heterotrophic respiration) — the full ecosystem carbon balance.
Aboveground NPP (ANPP) = biomass increment + litterfall. Measure plant biomass at start and end of season (or annually); add litterfall collected in litter traps; sum gives ANPP. Belowground NPP (BNPP) = root ingrowth into mesh bags placed in the soil; sequential root core samples; or minirhizotron cameras tracking root births and deaths. Total NPP = ANPP + BNPP. (4) Nutrient availability — N and P limitation is widespread; atmospheric N deposition has increased NPP in some N-limited systems. MODIS NPP remote sensing models (CASA, MOD17) use these as inputs via light use efficiency (ε) and NDVI.
Human Appropriation of Net Primary Production (HANPP) is the fraction of terrestrial NPP harvested, degraded, or prevented from accumulating by human activities — agriculture (crop harvest), grazing (consumed biomass), forestry, and urban land use. Globally, HANPP ≈ 15–25% of terrestrial NPP. This represents the human 'footprint' on the biosphere's productive capacity. High HANPP reduces the biomass available for wild species and ecosystem services. In heavily agricultural regions (Europe, East Asia), HANPP can exceed 50% of local NPP, leaving little for natural ecosystems.
