Net primary productivity (NPP) is the rate at which plants accumulate organic carbon through photosynthesis after subtracting their own autotrophic respiration: NPP = GPP − Ra. It represents the carbon available to consumers (herbivores, decomposers) and is the foundation of all food webs. NPP is expressed in g C/m²/yr or kg C/m²/yr. Global terrestrial NPP is approximately 60 Pg C/yr. NPP Formula

NPP = GPP − Ra

GPP = gross primary production (total photosynthesis); Ra = autotrophic respiration (plant respiration for maintenance and growth). Ra ≈ 50% of GPP on average. NPP ≈ 0.5 × GPP as a rough approximation.

High HANPP reduces the biomass available for wild species and ecosystem services. In heavily agricultural regions (Europe, East Asia), HANPP can exceed 50% of local NPP, leaving little for natural ecosystems.
