Types of Life Tables
- Cohort (dynamic) life table: Follows a real birth cohort from birth to death. Most biologically meaningful. Requires long-term data.
- Static (time-specific) life table: Records age structure at one point in time, assuming stable population. Used when cohort follow-up is impractical.

A life table records survival and reproduction by age class. Key columns: lx (fraction surviving to age x); qx (age-specific mortality rate); ex (life expectancy); mx (age-specific fecundity). From these, ecologists calculate R₀ = Σ(lx × mx), generation time T, and intrinsic growth rate r. Life tables reveal where mortality is concentrated in the life cycle and which ages contribute most to population growth.
A cohort life table follows a real group of individuals born at the same time from birth until all die — the most accurate approach but requires long-term monitoring. A static (time-specific) life table records age-class frequencies at a single point in time, assuming stable age distribution. Static tables are used when long-term cohort tracking is impractical. They are less accurate if population size or age structure is actively changing.
Type I: High survival until old age, then rapid mortality — humans, elephants, large mammals. Most mortality concentrated in old age. Type II: Constant mortality rate throughout life — lx declines linearly on log scale. Many bird species. Type III: Very high early mortality; survivors live long — fish, oysters, oaks (many seeds, few survivors). Most mortality concentrated in early life stages. These patterns reflect life history strategies — K-selected vs. r-selected organisms.
Life expectancy at age x (ex) = Tx/nx, where Tx = sum of all Lx values from age x onward, and Lx = (nx + n(x+1))/2 = average alive during interval x. Summing Lx forward from age x gives total future person-years available. Dividing by nx (number alive at age x) gives average additional lifespan at that age. Life expectancy at birth (x=0) is the overall average lifespan for the cohort.
