Why the 7:1 Rule Is Inaccurate
The 7:1 ratio comes from dividing average human lifespan (~70 years) by average dog lifespan (~10 years). The problem: aging is non-linear. A 1-year-old dog is sexually mature, fully grown, and physiologically equivalent to a young adult human — not a 7-year-old child. Dogs mature extremely rapidly in the first 1–2 years, then age more slowly relative to humans in later life.

Why Large Dog Breeds Age Faster
Giant breeds (Great Danes, Mastiffs) live shorter lives than small breeds — paradoxically opposite to the across-species pattern where larger animals live longer.
