Germination Percentage Formula
Germination % = (germinated seeds / total seeds tested) × 100
Standard: test 400 seeds (4 replicates of 100); optimal temperature and substrate (germination paper, sand, soil); defined duration (varies by species). ISTA (International Seed Testing Association) protocols specify exact conditions for each crop.
Speed of Germination (Mean Germination Time)
MGT = Σ(Tᵢ × nᵢ) / Σnᵢ
Tᵢ = time of germination (days); nᵢ = number of seeds germinating at time Tᵢ. Lower MGT = faster germination = better seed quality.
Germination Value (GV)
GV = (Peak Value) × (Mean Daily Germination). Peak Value = maximum cumulative germination / days to reach it. Commonly used for range grass seeds. Higher GV = better overall germination performance.
Factors Affecting Germination
- Temperature: Each species has cardinal temperatures (minimum, optimum, maximum); most crops: optimum 15–25°C
- Moisture: Sufficient imbibition; not waterlogged (anaerobic)
- Oxygen: Required for aerobic respiration during germination

MGT = Σ(Tᵢ × nᵢ)/Σnᵢ, where Tᵢ = day of germination and nᵢ = seeds germinating on day i. MGT measures germination speed — lower MGT = faster germination. Example: 5 seeds germinate on day 2, 30 on day 4, 15 on day 6, 5 on day 8 (total 55): MGT = (2×5 + 4×30 + 6×15 + 8×5)/(5+30+15+5) = (10+120+90+40)/55 = 260/55 = 4.7 days. MGT is used alongside germination % for complete seed quality characterization — a lot can have high germination% but slow, uneven germination (high MGT) that affects field establishment uniformity.
The four factors required for germination: (1) Adequate water: seeds must imbibe water to activate metabolism; drought = delayed or failed germination; waterlogged = anaerobic conditions inhibit root respiration. (2) Suitable temperature: each species has cardinal temperatures; most crops germinate best 10–30°C; germination fails below minimum (chilling injury) or above maximum (heat stress). (3) Oxygen: aerobic respiration required for seedling emergence; compacted or waterlogged soils restrict O₂. (4) No dormancy: dormant seeds won't germinate even under optimal conditions; dormancy requires breaking by stratification (cold/wet treatment for many tree species), scarification (abrade hard seed coat for legumes), or light treatment. Some crop seeds lose dormancy naturally during dry storage.
Seed rate is based on a target number of plants established per area. If germination is below the assumed value, more seeds must be sown to achieve the target plant population. Adjusted seed rate = standard rate × (assumed germination %) / (actual germination %). Example: standard rate assumes 90% germination (= 150 kg/ha); lot tests at 78% germination: adjusted rate = 150 × 90/78 = 150 × 1.154 = 173 kg/ha — must sow 23 kg/ha more seed to compensate. Similarly, field establishment losses (seedbed conditions, pests, weather) further reduce from germination %; include both germination% and field establishment% in seed rate calculations.
