Crude death rate (CDR) is the total number of deaths per 1,000 (or 100,000) population per year, without adjusting for age structure. It is the simplest mortality indicator and is calculated as: CDR = (Deaths / Population) × 1,000. CDR is 'crude' because it does not account for differences in age composition between populations — an older population will have a higher CDR than a younger one even if individual age-specific death rates are identical. For meaningful comparisons between populations with different age structures, age-standardized mortality rates are used instead. CDR is widely used in demography, epidemiology, and public health planning.

CDR Formula

CDR = (D / P) × 1,000

D = total deaths in the period; P = mid-year population; units = deaths per 1,000 population per year.

Example: country with 85,000 deaths and 12 million population: CDR = (85,000/12,000,000) × 1,000 = 7.08 per 1,000.

Global CDR Values

  • Global average: ~7–8 per 1,000
