Crude Birth Rate Formula
CBR = (Live births in a year / Midyear population) × 1,000
Example: 450,000 live births in a population of 25,000,000: CBR = (450,000 / 25,000,000) × 1,000 = 18 per 1,000.

Natural Increase Rate
NIR (%) = (CBR − CDR) / 10
CDR = crude death rate (deaths per 1,000). CBR = 20, CDR = 7: NIR = (20−7)/10 = 1.3% annual growth from natural increase alone. NIR > 0 means the population grows without counting migration.
CBR vs. Total Fertility Rate (TFR)
CBR is affected by age structure — a young population has a higher CBR at the same fertility level because more women are in reproductive age groups. TFR measures the average lifetime births per woman, independent of age structure. TFR below 2.1 leads to long-term population decline; TFR above 2.1 leads to growth. TFR is a purer measure of fertility behavior than CBR.

Crude birth rate (CBR) = (live births per year / midyear population) × 1,000. It measures live births per 1,000 people per year. Example: 250,000 births in a population of 20 million: CBR = (250,000/20,000,000) × 1,000 = 12.5 per 1,000. 'Crude' means the denominator is total population, not just women of reproductive age — making it simple to calculate but slightly imprecise as a fertility indicator.
Natural increase rate (NIR) = (CBR − CDR) / 10, expressed as a percent per year. It measures net population growth from births minus deaths, excluding migration. CBR = 22, CDR = 8: NIR = 1.4% annual growth. A high CBR combined with a high CDR can produce slower growth than a lower CBR in a healthy, low-mortality population. NIR combines both rates to give the actual net natural contribution to population change.
CBR is 'crude' because it divides births by total population — including men, children, the elderly — rather than only women of reproductive age. A more refined measure is the general fertility rate (births per 1,000 women aged 15–49) or total fertility rate (TFR — average lifetime births per woman). CBR is quick to calculate from basic census data but is influenced by age structure. A young population has more reproductive-age women, producing a higher CBR even at the same per-woman fertility as an older population.
CBR varies enormously globally. High CBR (sub-Saharan Africa): Niger ~47, Mali ~42, Chad ~40 per 1,000. Medium CBR: India ~18, Kenya ~26 per 1,000. Low CBR (developed countries): USA ~11, UK ~10, France ~10 per 1,000. Very low (demographic concern): South Korea ~5, Japan ~7, Italy ~7 per 1,000. The demographic transition model describes how countries move from high CBR + high CDR through high CBR + low CDR and eventually to low CBR + low CDR as development proceeds.
