Crown Cover Calculation
Measure crown width (CW) in two perpendicular directions (N-S and E-W). Ellipse approximation: Crown Area = π × (CW₁/2) × (CW₂/2). Or: Crown Area = π × CW₁ × CW₂ / 4. Example: CW₁ = 8 m; CW₂ = 6 m: Crown Area = π × 4 × 3 = 37.7 m².
Crown Width vs. DBH Relationships
Crown width correlates with DBH and can be estimated from allometric equations: CW = a + b × DBH. Used when direct measurement is impractical; LiDAR increasingly used for large-scale crown delineation.
Stand-Level Crown Cover
Sum of individual crown areas per unit area → stand-level crown cover percentage. If crown areas overlap: actual canopy cover < sum of crown areas. Crown cover differs from canopy cover (which measures actual ground shading; measured with densiometer).
