How a Clinometer Measures Tree Height
Stand a known horizontal distance (D) from the tree. Sight through the clinometer to the tree top and record the angle of elevation (θ_top). The height above your eye level is D × tan(θ_top). Add your eye height (h_eye) to get total tree height:
Tree height = D × tan(θ_top) + h_eye
If the ground slopes and the tree base is below horizontal, also measure the angle of depression to the base (θ_base):
Tree height = D × (tan θ_top + tan θ_base)
Worked Example
Observer stands 30 m from tree on flat ground. Eye height = 1.6 m. Angle to tree top = 32°:
Height above eye = 30 × tan(32°) = 30 × 0.625 = 18.75 m
Total height = 18.75 + 1.6 = 20.35 m
Types of Clinometers
- Suunto / Haga clinometer: Professional forestry instrument with percent and degree scales; accurate to ~0.5°
- Abney level: Classic surveying clinometer with spirit level and protractor arc
- Digital inclinometer: Electronic MEMS accelerometer sensor; digital readout
- Smartphone apps: Use built-in accelerometers; convenient for field use but less precise
Degrees vs. Percent Grade
Clinometers often have two scales:
- Degrees (°): Standard angle from horizontal
- Percent grade (%): Rise/run × 100. Conversion: % grade = tan(angle°) × 100. A 45° slope = 100% grade; 26.6° ≈ 50% grade.
Sources of Error
Common errors include inaccurate distance measurement (use a tape); mistaking a nearby branch for the tree apex; not being on level ground with the tree base; and parallax error from not aligning the eye consistently with the sight.

However, they are less precise than professional instruments (±1–3° vs. ±0.5°) and sensitive to phone tilt and calibration. For professional forestry inventory work, a calibrated optical or digital clinometer is preferred.
