Cattle BCS (1–5 Scale)
- 1: Emaciated — bones prominently visible; no fat; very poor prognosis
- 2: Thin — ribs easily seen; little fat covering; below target
- 3: Moderate — ribs not visible but easily felt; target BCS at calving for beef cows
- 4: Fat — ribs difficult to feel; fat over ribs; typically above target

Body condition score (BCS) is a standardized numerical assessment of an animal's subcutaneous fat and muscle reserves, evaluated by visual appraisal and tactile palpation of key anatomical areas. It is used because: body weight alone is misleading (a tall, lean animal may weigh the same as a short, fat one); BCS reflects energy reserves rather than total mass; it predicts reproductive performance, immune function, and disease risk. In dairy cows: BCS at calving predicts postpartum estrus interval and conception rates. In ewes: BCS at mating predicts litter size and conception rate. In horses: BCS > 7 predicts insulin resistance and laminitis risk. BCS-guided feeding prevents both undernutrition (poor reproduction, disease susceptibility) and overconditioning (metabolic disease, dystocia).
Cattle BCS is assessed by visual observation and palpation of: spinous processes (backbone), transverse processes, pin bones (tuber ischii), and tail head fat.
