Calculating Area-Based Application Rate
Amount needed = application rate × area to be treated
Example: apply herbicide at 1.5 kg active ingredient (a.i.)/ha to 8 ha: amount = 1.5 × 8 = 12 kg a.i. If the product contains 40% a.i.: product needed = 12/0.40 = 30 kg product.
Spray Volume and Concentration
For liquid formulations: Concentration in spray tank (g/L) = (application rate kg/ha × 1000 g/kg) / spray volume (L/ha). Example: 0.5 kg/ha product, 200 L/ha spray volume: concentration = (0.5 × 1000)/200 = 2.5 g/L in the tank mix.
Fertilizer Application Rate Calculation
Rate of fertilizer product (kg/ha) = target nutrient rate (kg N/ha) / (N content as fraction). Example: 150 kg N/ha using urea (46% N): urea needed = 150/0.46 = 326 kg/ha urea.
Sprayer Calibration
Verify actual output: spray a measured distance at known speed; collect and measure output volume; calculate: L/ha = (volume mL × 10,000) / (spray width m × distance m). Calibrate before each season and when changing nozzles.

Example: want to apply 120 kg N/ha to 50 ha using urea (46% N): urea product rate = 120/0.46 = 261 kg/ha; total urea = 261 × 50 = 13,043 kg. For NPK fertilizers: the label shows N-P₂O₅-K₂O percentages — divide the target N rate by the N content fraction. Verify units: if the nutrient rate is in lb/acre (US), convert to kg/ha first (×1.121) or keep everything in US units throughout.
1 kg/ha = 0.8922 lb/acre. 1 lb/acre = 1.1209 kg/ha. To convert kg/ha → lb/acre: multiply by 0.8922. To convert lb/acre → kg/ha: multiply by 1.1209. Example: apply pesticide at 750 g product/ha; sprayer delivers 250 L water/ha: tank concentration = 750/250 = 3.0 g/L. For each liter of water in the tank, add 3.0 g of product. Total product needed for full tank: 3.0 g/L × tank size (L). Important: confirm the application rate on the label is in g a.i./ha or g product/ha — these differ if the product is not 100% a.i. Use product concentration to convert between a.i. and product rates.
Sprayer calibration verifies that the actual spray volume applied matches the intended rate. Variables affecting output: pump pressure; nozzle wear (worn nozzles deliver more volume — replace when >10% above rated output); travel speed; nozzle type and spacing. Calibration method: fill tank with known volume of water; spray at normal operating pressure and speed over a measured area; compare volume used to expected: L/ha = (L used × 10,000 m²/ha) / (area covered in m²). Calibrate at the start of each season, after changing nozzles, and when output seems different. Incorrect calibration by ±25% can mean significant over- or under-application, affecting both efficacy and environmental safety.
