Knowing your grade before the official results come out is both practical and motivating. Our Test Grade Calculator converts raw scores into percentages and letter grades using standard grading scales. Enter the total number of questions and the number of correct answers — or the number wrong — and instantly see your percentage score, letter grade, and GPA equivalent. Teachers can also use this tool to set grading curves, determine how many questions a student can miss and still earn a target grade, and generate grade distribution benchmarks for their class.

Grading Made Transparent

Grading scales vary by institution, but the underlying math is universal: your score is correct answers divided by total, expressed as a percentage. Our Test Grade Calculator applies this formula and maps the result to standard US letter grades.

Test Grade Calculator

Enter total questions and either number correct or number wrong. The calculator displays your percentage score, letter grade (A+ through F), and GPA equivalent. You can adjust the grading scale thresholds to match your school — for example, setting an A at 93% rather than 90%.

For Students

Set targets before an exam: "I need 42 out of 50 to keep my A." Verify reported grades against raw scores afterward. Plan your final exam score needed to hit your target course grade.

For Teachers

Generate grading keys for any test length. See how adjusting scale cutoffs affects letter grade distribution. Communicate grade boundaries clearly to students before assessments.

Common Grading Scales

  • Standard US — A: 90"“100%, B: 80"“89%, C: 70"“79%, D: 60"“69%, F: below 60%.
  • Plus/Minus — Adds granularity in 3"“4% bands: A+: 97"“100%, A: 93"“96%, A−: 90"“92%.
  • Pass/Fail — Typically 60% or 70% passing threshold depending on the course.
  • GPA — A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus/minus adjusts by ±0.3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, 38 correct out of 45 total: 38 ÷ 45 × 100 = 84.4%. Our Test Grade Calculator does this instantly and also shows the corresponding letter grade and GPA points based on the grading scale you select.

On a standard scale where A starts at 90%, multiply the total questions by 0.10 and round down. For a 50-question test: 50 × 0.10 = 5, so you can miss up to 5 questions. For a 93% A threshold, it would be 50 × 0.07 = 3.5, meaning you can miss at most 3. Our calculator shows this directly when you enter your test parameters.

Yes. Our Test Grade Calculator allows you to customize the percentage thresholds for each letter grade. If your school uses a 92% cutoff for an A instead of the standard 90%, simply adjust the scale and all calculations update accordingly. This ensures the grades shown match your institution's specific requirements.
