The Tons per Square Inch to PSI Converter converts pressure from long tons per square inch (tsi) to pounds per square inch (PSI). The conversion factor is 1 tsi = 2,240 PSI, since one long ton (imperial ton) equals 2,240 pounds. This unit is used in specialized heavy engineering and metallurgical contexts where extremely high pressures are involved.

The ton per square inch represents an enormous pressure — over 150 times atmospheric pressure. It has historical roots in British heavy engineering, particularly in the steel industry, shipbuilding, and the manufacture of heavy ordnance. Material hardness tests, rolling mill pressures, and the strength specifications of armor plate were traditionally expressed in tons per square inch in British engineering practice.

In metallurgy and materials testing, the Brinell hardness number was originally defined in terms of kgf/mm² but was sometimes reported as tsi in British publications. The ultimate tensile strength of structural steel (about 60,000–80,000 PSI) corresponds to approximately 27–36 tsi. High-strength alloys can exceed 100 tsi (224,000 PSI). These values help engineers evaluate materials for demanding applications like pressure vessels, bridge cables, and aerospace structures.

While this unit is largely historical, it still appears in legacy engineering references, British Admiralty specifications, and some industrial contexts in the UK and former Commonwealth countries. Converting tsi to PSI and MPa (the modern SI equivalent) allows engineers to use historical data with contemporary specifications. Our converter provides both PSI and MPa outputs for maximum flexibility.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The formula: PSI = tsi × 2,240. Since 1 long ton = 2,240 pounds (by definition), 1 ton/in² = 2,240 lb/in² = 2,240 PSI.

For megapascals: MPa = PSI × 0.00689476, so MPa = tsi × 2,240 × 0.00689476 ≈ tsi × 15.4443.

Understanding Your Results

Common conversions: 1 tsi = 2,240 PSI = 15.44 MPa, 10 tsi = 22,400 PSI = 154.4 MPa, 30 tsi = 67,200 PSI = 463.3 MPa (approx. structural steel strength). Note: 1 long ton = 2,240 lb (not 2,000 lb, which is a US short ton).

Frequently Asked Questions

1 tsi = 2,240 PSI. This uses the long ton (imperial ton) of 2,240 pounds, not the short ton of 2,000 pounds.

PSI = tsi × 2,240. This is exact, since 1 long ton = 2,240 lb by definition.

Traditionally, tsi uses the long ton (2,240 lb = 1,016 kg). If a short ton (2,000 lb) is intended, it should be specified as 'short tons per square inch.' Always verify which ton is meant.

Primarily in historical British engineering, especially metallurgy, shipbuilding, and ordnance. It appears in British Admiralty specifications and older Lloyd's Register rules.

1 tsi = 15.44 MPa. This connects the historical British unit to modern SI engineering specifications.

Mild steel: about 25–30 tsi (56,000–67,200 PSI). High-strength structural steel: 35–50 tsi. High-strength alloys: up to 100+ tsi.

Rarely. It has been largely replaced by MPa and PSI in modern engineering. However, it appears in historical references, legacy specifications, and some UK industrial contexts.

tsi is a pressure (force per area). Tons-force is just a force. 1 tsi means 1 ton of force applied to 1 square inch of area.

1 tsi = 1.5749 kgf/mm². This connects British tsi to the metric gravitational unit commonly used in European and Asian metallurgy.

Proof stress (yield strength) is the stress at which a material shows 0.2% permanent deformation. For mild steel, it is about 15–20 tsi (33,600–44,800 PSI or 230–310 MPa).
