Break the room into rectangles (and other simple shapes). Measure each section separately and add the areas together. For example, an L-shaped room can be divided into two rectangles. Sketch the floor plan on paper first to make sure you don't double-count any area.
Enter all dimensions in feet (decimal format). If your tape measure shows feet and inches, convert inches to a decimal fraction: divide the inch value by 12 and add it to the foot value. For example, 10 ft 6 in = 10.5 ft.
Always add a waste/overage buffer to your calculated area. Standard recommendation is 10% for straight-lay patterns, 15% for diagonal or herringbone, and up to 20% for irregular spaces. Measure the perimeter of the room (total length of all walls) and multiply by ceiling height to get gross wall area. Subtract about 21 sq ft for each standard door and 15 sq ft for each average window. One gallon of paint covers approximately 350–400 sq ft per coat.
This calculator computes the flat (projected) area. For roofing, you need the actual surface area, which is larger than the projected area by a factor depending on the roof pitch. Multiply the projected area by a pitch multiplier (e.g., 1.07 for a 4/12 pitch, 1.20 for a 7/12 pitch) to get the true roofing area.
A trapezoid is a four-sided shape where two sides (the parallel sides) run in the same direction but have different lengths, and the height is the perpendicular distance between them. Common examples include tapered driveways, certain kitchen countertop shapes, and odd-angled garden beds.
