This Significant Figures Calculator (Sig Fig) helps you round numbers the right way for chemistry, physics, lab reports, and engineering homework. Use it to round to significant figures, decimal places, or convert any number to scientific notation instantly.
It’s designed to be fast and practical: enter a number once, select what you need, and copy the result.
Significant figures are the digits in a number that carry meaning about precision. Rounding to sig figs is different from rounding to decimal places, especially when the number is very large or very small.
Conceptually, rounding to sig figs works like this:
Scientific notation format is: x = m × 10^e, where 1 ≤ |m| < 10.

Decimal places count digits after the decimal point. Significant figures count meaningful digits starting from the first non-zero digit.
Because sig figs preserve overall precision across magnitudes, while decimals only control precision after the decimal point.
Scientific notation is useful when numbers are extremely large or small, or when you want to clearly communicate measurement precision.
Counting sig figs depends on how the number is written (for example, 1200 vs 1200.). If you want an exact sig-fig counter, we can add a text-input version to preserve trailing zeros.
