A ring that does not fit is a ring that does not get worn. Whether you are sizing a custom engagement ring, ordering a gift for someone special, or crafting your own jewelry, knowing the correct ring size is essential. The problem is that ring sizing systems are not universal — the US uses a numeric scale, Europe uses millimeter circumference, the UK and Australia use an alphabetic letter system, and Japan, India, and China each have their own standards. The Ring Sizing Calculator converts between these systems instantly, starting from a finger circumference, diameter, or an existing size in any major system.

The foundation of all ring sizing is the inner circumference of the ring — the measurement that directly corresponds to the circumference of the finger at the knuckle. This is the most reliable measurement method because it accounts for the full perimeter of the finger rather than just the diameter at one point. To measure finger circumference at home, wrap a strip of paper or a thin piece of string around the base of the target finger (the knuckle is the widest part and should be the sizing reference for rings that need to slide over the knuckle). Mark where the paper overlaps and measure that length in millimeters with a ruler. This measurement is your EU/ISO ring size.

The US ring size system uses a scale beginning at size 0 (circumference approximately 36.5 mm) and increasing in steps of 0.8229 mm per half size. Most adult women wear US sizes 5–7 (circumferences 49.3–54.4 mm), while adult men typically wear US sizes 8–12 (circumferences 57.2–65.1 mm). Half sizes are common and important — a half-size difference is approximately 0.4 mm in circumference, which can mean the difference between a comfortable fit and a ring that pinches or slides off.

The EU/ISO system, used across continental Europe, is the simplest: the size number is directly the inner circumference in millimeters. A size 57 EU ring fits a finger with a 57 mm circumference. This system eliminates the need for conversion tables and is the preferred system for custom jewelers and CAD/CAM ring manufacturing, where specifications feed directly into ring-making software.

The UK and Australian alphabetic system runs from A (smallest) to Z+ (largest). Each letter corresponds to a 1.25 mm increment in circumference, starting at approximately 37.5 mm for size A. The calculator returns the numeric index of the letter (0 = A, 1 = B, etc.) for computational convenience. In practice, use a standard UK ring size chart to map the index to the corresponding letter. For example, UK size N corresponds roughly to US size 6.5 and EU size 52.5.

Ring sizing is best done at the end of the day when fingers are slightly swollen from daily activity — morning measurements tend to run small. Temperature also affects finger size: cold weather can cause fingers to shrink by up to half a size. When in doubt, size up slightly rather than down, as rings are far easier to size down than up once made. For wide bands (over 6 mm), consider going up by a half size since wider bands require more clearance to slide over the knuckle comfortably. This calculator is an invaluable reference for both jewelers and customers navigating the world of international ring sizing standards.

How It Works

All conversions route through circumference in mm (C). From diameter: C = D × π. From US size: C = (US size × 0.8229) + 36.5 mm. To US size: US = (C − 36.5) / 0.8229. EU size = C (mm). UK alphabetic index = round((C − 37.5) / 1.25), where 0 = A, 1 = B, etc. Inner diameter = C / π.

Understanding Your Results

For online ring ordering, use EU size (circumference in mm) as it has no rounding ambiguity. When communicating with a US jeweler, round the US size to the nearest 0.5. For UK jewelers, map the alphabetic index to the letter (A=0, B=1, C=2... N=13, O=14, etc.). Always specify the target finger (index, middle, ring, pinky) and whether the measurement was taken at knuckle or base.

A 52 mm circumference finger converts to approximately US size 6, EU size 52, and UK size M (index 12). This is the most common women's ring size in the US market, making it a useful benchmark.

US size 10 corresponds to a 62.7 mm circumference, approximately EU 63, and UK size U (index 20). An inner diameter of just under 20 mm is a useful spec when ordering pre-made ring blanks or sizing tubes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The paper strip method is most accurate: cut a narrow strip of paper (about 5 mm wide), wrap it snugly around the base of the finger (slide it over the knuckle first to confirm clearance), mark the overlap, and measure the length in millimeters. This gives your EU size directly and this calculator converts it to US or UK. Measure in the evening and on a warm day for the most representative size.

Order the larger size. A ring that is slightly too large can be sized down by a jeweler in about 30 minutes. A ring that is too small requires more complex sizing up, which can affect some ring designs (especially those with full eternity settings or certain metals like tungsten that cannot be resized at all).

A narrow band (1–2 mm) sits at the base of the finger and can slide freely. A wide band (8–10 mm) must slide over the full width of the knuckle to reach the finger base, requiring more clearance. For bands wider than 6 mm, size up by half a US size to ensure comfortable wearing and removal.

Yes. Factors including weight gain or loss, pregnancy, arthritis, injury, and age all affect finger size. Fingers naturally enlarge slightly with age as joints widen. Many people find their ring size changes by 1–2 sizes over their lifetime, which is why heirloom rings often need resizing.

The ring finger (fourth finger) of the left hand is traditional in Western cultures for engagement and wedding rings. In some European and South American traditions, the right hand ring finger is used. Note that most people's dominant hand is slightly larger, so a ring sized for the right hand ring finger may need to be slightly smaller for the left, or vice versa.

Tungsten carbide, titanium, and ceramic rings typically cannot be resized because of their extreme hardness. Rings with full eternity settings (diamonds or gemstones all the way around) are very difficult and expensive to resize without disturbing stones. If you are buying one of these ring types as a gift, have the recipient professionally measured before ordering.

They are effectively the same — the EU ring size standard (used across Europe) aligns with ISO 8653, which defines ring size as the inner circumference in millimeters. A size 54 EU ring has an inner circumference of exactly 54 mm. This is the most standardized system globally and is preferred by professional jewelers for custom orders.
