Pizza size is deceptive because area grows with the square of radius. A 16-inch pizza is not twice as big as an 8-inch pizza — it is four times bigger. The Pizza Size Calculator reveals the true area of any pizza, calculates area per slice, and tells you exactly how many slices each person gets at your table.
The formula for pizza area is simply the formula for a circle: Area = π × r², where r is the radius (diameter ÷ 2). A 14-inch pizza has a radius of 7 inches and an area of 153.9 square inches. A 16-inch pizza has a radius of 8 inches and an area of 201.1 square inches — 31% more pizza for what is often a much smaller price premium.
Understanding pizza area has real practical applications. When ordering pizza for a group, knowing the area per person lets you calculate how many pizzas of what size to order. Pizza shops often charge a premium for small pizzas on a per-square-inch basis — a 10-inch pizza at $12 ($1.52/sq in) may cost more per square inch than a 16-inch pizza at $18 ($0.89/sq in).
Standard pizza sizing conventions: personal (6–8 inches), small (10 inches), medium (12–13 inches), large (14–16 inches), extra-large (18–20 inches), party size (24 inches+). Slice count varies by pizzeria: 6 slices for small, 8 for medium and large, 10–12 for extra-large. Slice size also matters — some shops cut thinner slices than others.
Total area = π × (diameter / 2)². Area per slice = Total area ÷ Number of slices. Slices per person = Total slices ÷ Number of people. Area per person = Total area ÷ Number of people. All using the standard circle area formula.
A typical adult serving of pizza is 2–3 slices of an 8-slice 14-inch pizza, or approximately 38–58 square inches. If area per person is below 30 square inches, you may want to order more pizza or add sides. If above 60 square inches, you have generous portions or likely leftovers.

16-inch cut into 10 slices for 3 people: 3.3 slices each and 67 sq in per person — a generous serving.
Almost always, yes. Two 10-inch pizzas (2 × 78.5 = 157 sq in) versus one 14-inch pizza (153.9 sq in) — the two smalls total slightly more area but usually cost significantly more. One 18-inch pizza (254.5 sq in) typically costs less than two 12-inch pizzas (2 × 113.1 = 226.2 sq in).
For a full meal: 38–50 square inches per adult is typical. For pizza with side dishes and appetizers: 25–35 sq in per person. For hungry teenagers and parties: 50–65 sq in per person. For children under 10: plan half adult portions (20–25 sq in per child).
Domino's: small 10 in (6 slices), medium 12 in (8 slices), large 14 in (8 slices), XL 16 in (8 slices). Pizza Hut: personal 6 in (4 slices), small 9 in (6 slices), medium 12 in (8 slices), large 14 in (8 slices). Papa John's: small 10 in (6 slices), medium 12 in (8 slices), large 14 in (8 slices), XL 16 in (8 slices).
For rectangular pizzas (Sicilian or sheet pan style), area = length × width. A standard half-sheet pan pizza (13 × 18 inches) has 234 square inches — comparable to an 17-inch round pizza. Slice count varies by how the rectangle is cut. The principle of larger = more value per dollar still applies.
This is personal preference. Deep dish (Chicago style) has a thick crust with high topping ratio. New York style is thin with wide slices and minimal outer crust. Neapolitan uses a thin center with a charred puffy outer crust. Wood-fired pizzas often have an uneven crust that some prefer. The crust is typically 20–30% of the pizza's volume in NY style.
Pizza shrinks during baking as moisture evaporates and the dough sets. A 14-inch raw pizza typically becomes a 13–13.5 inch baked pizza. High-heat cooking (wood fire, pizza steel at 550°F+) produces faster baking with less moisture loss. Size advertised by pizzerias typically refers to the pre-bake diameter.
Skillet method: heat a dry cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat, place pizza slice in cold, heat 2–3 minutes until bottom is crispy, add 1 tsp water beside the pizza, cover with a lid for 1 minute to melt cheese via steam. Results rival fresh pizza. Oven method: 375°F for 8–10 minutes on a baking sheet. Microwave makes crust soggy and is not recommended.
For a pizza party as the main food: one 14-inch (8-slice) pizza per 2–3 adults. For 10 adults: order 4 large pizzas. Add one extra pizza per group of 8–10 if serving people with big appetites or as the only food. For children, count 4 children as 2 adults for pizza ordering purposes.
The 14-inch large pizza is the most commonly sold size at major chains, accounting for over 40% of total pizza orders. The 12-inch medium is second. The XL 16-inch has grown in popularity, particularly for delivery orders where per-square-inch value is highest.
Thin-crust and deep-dish pizzas have dramatically different volumes despite identical diameters. A deep-dish pizza with 1-inch crust has roughly 4× the dough volume of an ultra-thin Neapolitan at the same diameter. Price-per-square-inch comparisons are most useful for comparing pizzas of similar style and thickness within the same pizzeria.
