The Miles per Hour to Knots Converter converts speed from mph to knots using the factor 1 knot = 1.15078 mph (so 1 mph = 0.868976 knots). This conversion is needed when communicating speeds between maritime/aviation contexts (knots) and road/everyday contexts (mph).

Pilots filing flight plans, sailors estimating passage times, and weather reporters communicating storm data all need to convert between mph and knots. In the United States, weather reports often give wind speeds in mph, while aviation weather (METARs) uses knots.

The conversion factor derives from the relationship between nautical miles (1.852 km) and statute miles (1.609344 km): 1 mph = 1.609344/1.852 = 0.868976 knots.

Our converter also provides km/h for international reference.

How It Works

The formula: knots = mph ÷ 1.15078 (or equivalently, × 0.868976). For km/h: km/h = mph × 1.609344 (exact).

Understanding Your Results

Common conversions: 60 mph = 52.14 knots, 100 mph = 86.90 knots, 74 mph = 64.30 knots (Category 1 hurricane). An average wind speed of 15 mph = 13.03 knots.

Frequently Asked Questions

1 mph = 0.868976 knots.

Divide by 1.15078, or multiply by 0.869. For example, 100 mph = 86.9 knots.

60 mph ≈ 52.1 knots.

74 mph (64 knots) — this is the Category 1 hurricane threshold on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

200 mph = 173.8 knots.

Public weather reports use mph, but aviation weather (METARs, TAFs) use knots.

The fastest recorded wind gust was 253 mph (220 knots) at Barrow Island, Australia.

Pilots subtract about 13% from mph to estimate knots (multiply by 0.87).

Because nautical miles (based on Earth's geometry) and statute miles (historical convention) have different origins.

500 mph = 434.5 knots — typical commercial jet ground speed.
