The GST Calculator computes Goods and Services Tax, a broad-based consumption tax used in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, and many other countries. GST functions similarly to VAT but is typically implemented with a simpler, more uniform rate structure.

In Canada, the federal GST rate is 5%, applied nationwide on most goods and services. Some provinces add a Provincial Sales Tax (PST), while others combine GST and PST into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) at rates of 13% (Ontario) to 15% (Atlantic provinces). Quebec uses its own QST at 9.975%.

In Australia, the GST rate is 10%, introduced in 2000 as part of a major tax reform. Most goods and services are subject to GST, with key exemptions for fresh food, healthcare, education, and financial services. In New Zealand, GST is 15%, one of the broadest-based consumption taxes in the world with very few exemptions. Singapore charges 9% GST (increased from 8% in 2024), and India's GST has multiple slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%.

This calculator works in both directions: add GST to a pre-tax amount for pricing and invoicing, or remove GST from a tax-inclusive price for accounting and expense reporting. Select your province/region from the dropdown for convenient reference, or enter any custom GST rate manually.

For Canadian businesses, proper GST/HST management includes registering for a GST/HST account (mandatory if revenue exceeds $30,000), collecting tax on sales, claiming Input Tax Credits (ITCs) on business purchases, and filing periodic returns (monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on revenue).

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The calculation is identical to VAT:

  • Add GST: After-Tax = Before-Tax × (1 + GST Rate / 100)
  • Remove GST: Before-Tax = After-Tax / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
  • GST Amount: After-Tax - Before-Tax

The province selector is for reference only — the actual rate used is the entered GST Rate.

Understanding Your Results

If you're a Canadian resident, remember that GST is just part of the picture. Provinces may add PST or use HST. Total tax on purchases can range from 5% (Alberta, no PST) to 15% (Atlantic provinces, HST).

Frequently Asked Questions

Goods and Services Tax is a broad-based consumption tax on the supply of most goods and services. It's essentially a form of VAT used in countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and India.

The federal GST rate in Canada is 5%. However, total consumption tax varies by province: Alberta 5% (GST only), Ontario 13% (HST), Quebec ~15% (5% GST + 9.975% QST), British Columbia 12% (5% GST + 7% PST), Atlantic provinces 15% (HST).

GST is the federal tax (5%). HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the federal GST with the provincial component into a single tax (13-15%). Provinces using HST include Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and PEI.

ITCs allow businesses to claim back the GST/HST they paid on business purchases and expenses. This ensures the tax burden falls on the final consumer, not businesses in the supply chain.

You must register if your total revenue from taxable supplies exceeds $30,000 in any single calendar quarter or in four consecutive calendar quarters. Below this threshold, registration is optional but may be beneficial for claiming ITCs.

Basic groceries are zero-rated (0% GST). However, prepared foods, restaurant meals, snack foods, and candy are taxed at the full GST/HST rate.

Australian GST is 10%, introduced in 2000. It applies to most goods and services, with exemptions for fresh food, healthcare, education, and financial services. Businesses with turnover above A$75,000 must register.

India's GST has multiple slabs: 0% (essential food), 5% (household necessities), 12% (processed food, hotels), 18% (most goods and services), and 28% (luxury items, tobacco). It replaced many state and central taxes in 2017.

In Australia, tourists can claim GST refunds on purchases over A$300 through the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS). In Canada, the visitor rebate program was discontinued in 2007.

In Canada: monthly (revenue over $6M), quarterly ($1.5M–$6M), or annually (under $1.5M). In Australia: monthly or quarterly depending on turnover. Most small businesses file quarterly.
