The Final Grade Calculator answers the most common student question at the end of a semester: what score do I need on my final exam to achieve my desired course grade? By combining your current course standing with the weight of the final exam, this calculator determines the minimum final exam score required to hit your target.

Final exams vary widely in their contribution to the course grade — from as little as 10–15% in heavily assignment-weighted courses to 50–100% in courses where the final is the sole grade. Understanding the final's weight is critical: a heavy final has the power to significantly raise or lower the course grade, while a low-weight final has limited impact either way.

This calculator uses the standard weighted average formula for computing final course grades. It also shows the course grade you would receive if you scored an average of 70% on the final — giving you a realistic baseline to compare against. Knowing your needed score helps you prioritize study time: if you need a 95% to reach your goal, that signals more intensive preparation is required; if you only need a 60%, you may be able to allocate study time elsewhere.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The final course grade is a weighted sum:

$$\text{Final Grade} = \text{Current Grade} \times (1 - w) + \text{Final Score} \times w$$

Where w is the final exam weight as a decimal. Solving for the required final score:

$$\text{Required Final Score} = \frac{\text{Desired Grade} - \text{Current Grade} \times (1 - w)}{w}$$

If the required score exceeds 100, the desired grade cannot be achieved with a perfect final exam. If the required score is 0 or negative, the desired grade is already secured regardless of the final. This formula assumes that the current grade represents 100% minus the final exam weight — i.e., all other coursework is complete.

Understanding Your Results

A required final score below 60% means your goal is very achievable with modest effort. A score between 60–80% is attainable with standard preparation. A score between 80–90% requires solid study. A score between 90–100% demands near-perfect performance — rigorous preparation is essential. A required score above 100% means the target grade is mathematically impossible without extra credit. In that case, reassess your target grade based on what is realistically achievable.

Worked Examples

score if average final81.25

With an 85% current grade and a 25% final, reaching 90% requires 105% on the final — impossible. The student should target 88–89% (B+) as a realistic goal.

Maintaining a B

Inputs

current grade88
desired grade83

With a strong 88% base and a 40% final weight, only a 75.5% on the final is needed to maintain a B (83%). The student has significant margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is the most common use case — the calculator is designed precisely for this. Enter your current grade (the weighted average of all coursework completed so far), your desired final course grade, and the final exam's weight. The result tells you exactly what score you need on the upcoming final exam. Make sure your current grade accurately reflects all graded work excluding the final.

Final exam weight is the percentage of the total course grade that the final exam accounts for. If your syllabus says the final is worth 30% of the course grade, enter 30. The remaining 70% is assumed to be represented by your current grade. Check your course syllabus carefully — weights are sometimes listed as percentages, fractions, or category totals that need to be summed.

If the required score exceeds 100%, your target grade is mathematically unattainable through normal means. Adjust your target grade downward and recalculate. You can also check if the course offers extra credit opportunities. Focus on scoring as high as possible on the final to maximize your course grade, even if the original target cannot be reached.

Yes — the same formula applies to any weighted exam. If your midterm is worth 20% and there are other assignments making up the remaining 80%, enter your current grade before the midterm, your desired grade, and the midterm weight of 20%. The calculator will tell you what score you need on the midterm. Note that 'current grade' must reflect only completed coursework (not the midterm itself).

Convert to percentages first. If you have earned 850 out of 1000 possible points for completed work, your current grade is 85%. If the final exam is worth 200 points and the total course is 1200 points, the final weight is 200/1200 = 16.7%. Enter these percentage values in the calculator. Always base calculations on the percentage of total course points, not raw point values.

No — this calculator assumes straight-scale grading without curves. If your instructor applies a curve after the final exam, the actual needed score may differ. Some professors also drop the lowest grade or offer replacement policies for the final. These policies can significantly change what score you need — review your syllabus carefully and, if in doubt, ask your instructor directly.
