The Decomposition Rate Calculator determines the rate constant (k) for the exponential decay of organic matter. Decomposition follows the first-order exponential decay model, where the remaining mass decreases exponentially over time. The rate constant k quantifies how quickly organic material breaks down.

This calculator is essential for understanding nutrient cycling, soil carbon dynamics, and litter decomposition in ecosystems. A higher k value indicates faster decomposition, which is influenced by temperature, moisture, litter quality, and the decomposer community.

Visual Analysis

How It Works

The decomposition model follows exponential decay:

Mt = M0 × e-kt

Solving for k:

k = -ln(Mt / M0) / t

Where:

  • M0 is the initial mass
  • Mt is the remaining mass at time t
  • k is the decomposition rate constant
  • t is the time elapsed

The half-life (time for 50% decomposition) is ln(2)/k, approximately 0.693/k.

Worked Examples

k = -ln(37/100)/1 = 0.994 yr-1. This fast decomposition rate is typical of easily degradable leaf litter.

Woody Debris Decomposition

Woody material decomposes slowly (k = 0.074), with a half-life of over 9 years due to lignin content.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main factors are temperature (warmer is faster), moisture (moderate moisture is optimal), litter quality (high nitrogen and low lignin decompose faster), and the decomposer community (fungi, bacteria, invertebrates). Tropical ecosystems typically have the highest decomposition rates.

The decomposition constant k indicates how quickly organic matter decays. Higher k means faster decomposition. A k of 1.0 means about 63% decomposes in one time unit. A k of 0.1 means only about 10% decomposes per time unit. It allows comparison of decomposition rates across different substrates and environments.

Exponential decay is appropriate because the rate of decomposition is proportional to the amount of decomposable material remaining. As easily degradable components are consumed first, the remaining material becomes increasingly recalcitrant, slowing the overall rate. This first-order kinetic model is a reasonable approximation for most field studies.
