Asphalt plants and contractors quote material by the ton, not by volume — so getting your paving quantity right means converting from the dimensions of your project to the weight of material needed. The Tonnage Formula

Asphalt tonnage is computed from volume and material density:

Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)

Weight (lbs) = Volume (ft³) × Density (lbs/ft³)

Short tons = Weight (lbs) / 2,000

The density of hot mix asphalt varies by mix design and aggregate type. Common values:

  • Dense-graded HMA (standard): 145–148 lbs/ft³ (2,323–2,371 kg/m³)
  • Open-graded friction course: 120–130 lbs/ft³ (1,922–2,083 kg/m³) — lower density due to intentional voids
  • Stone mastic asphalt (SMA): 150–155 lbs/ft³ (2,403–2,483 kg/m³) — denser due to stone skeleton

Short Tons vs. Metric Tonnes: Getting the Units Right

Two weight units are used for asphalt procurement:

  • Short ton (US ton): 2,000 lbs = 907.185 kg — standard in the United States
  • Metric tonne (t): 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lbs — standard internationally and increasingly used in Canada
  • Long ton (UK ton): 2,240 lbs = 1,016.05 kg — occasionally seen in older UK specifications

A common ordering error is confusing short tons and metric tonnes — they differ by about 10% (1 metric tonne = 1.102 short tons). On a large paving project, this 10% error represents significant over- or under-ordering. Always confirm which ton unit your supplier quotes before placing an order.

Compacted vs. Loose Tonnage

Asphalt suppliers deliver material by the loose ton — the weight of uncompacted mix before rolling. The compacted density (after rolling) is typically 5–10% higher than the loose mix density because air voids are reduced from ~20% in loose mix to 4–8% in properly compacted pavement. This means that if your calculation gives 100 compacted tons, you need to order approximately 105–110 loose tons to account for the compaction shrinkage. Most experienced contractors automatically apply this factor when converting from design tonnage (compacted) to order tonnage (loose). Confirm with your supplier whether their delivery tickets record loose or compacted weight — most record loose weight at the plant scale.   • Car parking space (8.5 × 18 ft): ≈ 1.7 tons per space
  • Residential driveway (12 × 50 ft): ≈ 12.6 tons
  • Tennis court (60 × 120 ft): ≈ 90 tons
  • One lane-mile of road (12 ft wide): ≈ 500 tons at 3 inches
